The founders' story
The two American founders of Ustream, John Ham and Brad Hunstable, were classmates at West Point, where they studied engineering. After graduating, they were deployed together as junior officers, where they discovered that they both had the urge to be entrepreneurs. Together, they started a digital photo and photo printing Web site, focused on the local market in Ohio, where they were stationed. Just when it began to take off, however, John was deployed to Iraq, and they were forced to shut down the company.
After they finished their 5 years in the U. S. Army as decorated officers, they returned to the civilian world, but with the entrepreneurship bug still calling to them. This time, they decided to set their sights higher. They got together with the offshore developers who had developed their photo site, Gyula Feher and Adam Katona, and started Ustream, this time as partners and co-founders.
The Ustream team bootstrapped all the way, taking no outside money until a number of angel investors led by Chris Yeh and Jeff Clavier invested a small amount to allow Ustream to launch.
Ustream launched on March 26, 2007, and took off based on strong word of mouth. Key appearances at the Web 2.0 Conference, key early adopters like John Edwards, Chris Dodd, and Chris Pirillo, and key events like the launch of the iPhone all contributed to Ustream's growth.
Today, Ustream has over 20,000 broadcasters and produces over 2,000 hours of original programming every day.
