Dear Masashi:
I'm writing to invite you to the 29th annual March 12 to 14, 2006,
at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA.
As a member of Release 1.0, you know that we provide vital insights
to the key decision makers and influencers who lead the global IT
industry - people like you. Once a year we bring our community
together at PC Forum - an intense, three-day event that has stayed
current and has been the must-attend conference for IT-industry
executives, investors, entrepreneurs, thinkers and policymakers
for 29 years. Attendees leave with new partnerships, applicable
intelligence for their own businesses and an expanded view of
what's possible.
The theme for this year's PC (Platforms for Communication) Forum
is Erosion of Power: Users in Charge. The trick is to distinguish
between power over others, which corrupts, and power over one's
own life, which uplifts.
The theme for the this year's forum is Erosion of Power: Users in
Charge. The trick is to distinguish between power over others,
which corrupts, and power over one's own life, which uplifts.
That's a bold statement and not always true, but it's the distinction
I want to make. What could be more empowering than control over your
own time? But it doesn't end there. There's also control over your
data, filtering your search results, the ads you see, the people
who see you... You may not control the world around you, but you
should feel in control of the tools you use to interact with it
and what you let in to your world.
At this year's PC Forum, we'll examine the business opportunities
in the subtle but pervasive shift that's making this possible.
It's not - as some people think - that Google and search are taking
over the world. Google's and others' tools are enabling me - and
millions of other me's - to take over their own worlds. In the
end, I don't just want information; I want actions based on
structured and actionable information that reflects my own
personal preferences.
I can find a flight to the place I want if I'm willing to pay
the price - or get a ride at the price I want if I'm willing to
take the route someone else is flying. So why can't I find a
doctor who will communicate with me via e-mail? (I'll take the
risk that the information will fall into the wrong hands.)
Why can't I get the pool opened at 5 am? (I'll take the risk of
swimming without a lifeguard.)
In short, with control comes the opportunity for users to take risks
. And with user control comes responsibility - for the industry to
make options comparable and risks measurable, and for the individual
to understand the trade-offs and accept the consequences.
Come to PC Forum and join your colleagues - IT-industry executives,
investors, entrepreneurs, thinkers and policymakers, together with
leaders and thinkers outside IT who shape the world we live in -
as they tease out the challenges, debate solutions and discover
opportunities in this decentralized world.
I hope to see you there.
